Guide to Lightning Lane at Walt Disney World

If you’re planning a trip to Walt Disney World or thinking about planning a vacation, you’ve probably heard about Disney Genie+, Individual Attraction Selections, and Lightning Lanes. You might also be thinking “what is it and how do I handle all of this?” I’m here to help you out with this Guide to Lightning Lanes at Walt Disney World.

First things first, as of July 24, 2024, Disney is no longer using the “Genie+” and “Individual Attraction Selection” terminology.

  • Genie+ is now known as Lightning Lane Multi Pass
  • Individual Attraction Selection is now known as Lightning Lane Single Pass
  • Lightning Lane Premier Pass is a new option available.

Disney World Lightning Lane

To get started, be sure you have downloaded the My Disney Experience (MDE) app. MDE is where you will you be able to access many offerings available as you’re planning your trip, including Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass, as well as Lightning Lane Premier Pass if you are staying in a Deluxe or Deluxe Villa Resort. Once you’ve downloaded MDE and booked your trip, be sure to:

  • Confirm that your Resort reservation and/or tickets are linked to your My Disney Experience App.
  • Confirm that you are connected with your travel party on your Friends & Family List and that all members of your travel party have their reservations and/or tickets linked.
  • Have a plan for what attractions/experiences you would like to book for each park day and have backups in case there is no availability for your first picks.

But we’re getting a little ahead of ourselves – let’s talk about the different terms you’ll need to know . . .

  • Lighting Lane Multi Pass: Previously known as Genie+, allows you to secure a time to ride up to 3 attractions at a theme park available on the Multi Pass in advance of your visit. Once in the park, you are able to reserve additional times once you have redeemed a reservation.
  • Lightning Lane Single Pass: Previously known as Individual Lightning Lane/Individual Attraction Selections, allows you to secure a time to ride one of the most highly demanded attractions in advance of your visit.
  • Lighting Lane Premier Pass: A brand new offering, Lightning Lane Premier Pass allows guests to purchase a pass that provides that access to ride each Lightning Lane attraction one time at the selected park. No reservations are required to enter a Lightning Lane, giving you more freedom to ride when you want.

What are Lightning Lane Multi Passes?

Lightning Lane Multi Passes were previously known as Genie+ but have changed a bit (for the better!). You are now able to purchase your Lightning Lane Passes in advance of your trip, allowing you to plan in advance.

Lightning Lane Multi Pass gives you the ability to make up to three experience reservations at one park each day that you purchase the pass. There are over 40 experiences available across Walt Disney World to book as part of Multi Pass and you’re able to select a return window that span one hour.

Lighting Lane Multi Pass Attractions

As mentioned, you will be able to book up to three attraction reservations in advance of your trip for the days you purchase a Multi Pass. When making selections for Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios you are able to book one attraction from Tier A and two attractions from Tier B (or all three from Tier B). At Disney’s Animal Kingdom there are no tiers, so you can select three attractions from the entire list.

How to use Lightning Lane at Disney World

When Can I Purchase Lightning Lane Multi Pass?

Disney Resort Guests: Guests of Disney Resort hotels and other select hotels can purchase passes 7 days prior to your check-in date at 7 AM EST for your length of stay (up to 14 days). This early planning benefit is available to guests staying at Disney Resort hotels, Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel, Swan Hotel, and Swan Reserve, and Shades of Green Resort.

Non-Disney Resort Guests with Date-Based Ticket: Guests NOT staying at a Disney Resort hotel can purchase passes 3 days prior to your ticket start date at 7 AM EST for the total number of valid admission days on their ticket.

Non-Disney Resort Guests with Annual Pass: Annual Passholders NOT staying at a Disney Resort hotel can purchase passes 3 days prior to your park visit at 7 AM EST. Please note, if you are an Annual Passholder with a Disney Resort reservation, you are able to make your reservations 7 days prior to check-in.

NOTE: Before you purchase a Lightning Lane pass, you must have valid theme park admission; you may also need a theme park reservation, depending on the type of admission and the date of your visit.

How to Purchase Lightning Lane Passes

Before you purchase a Lightning Lane Pass, be sure you have done the below:

  • Download the My Disney Experience App
  • Confirm that your Resort reservation and/or tickets are linked to your My Disney Experience App.
  • Confirm that you are connected with your travel party on your Friends & Family List and that all members of your travel party have their reservations and/or tickets linked.
  • Have a plan for what attractions/experiences you would like to book for each park day and have backups in case there is no availability for your first picks.

Once you’ve confirmed the above and your booking window has opened (see above for booking window information), follow the below instructions:

  • Open the My Disney Experience app
  • Tap the Lightning Lane Passes section on the home screen
  • Select a date and theme park
  • Select a Lightning Lane Single Pass, a Lightning Lane Multi Pass or both.
    • If you select a Lightning Lane Multi Pass, you can choose up to 3 Lightning Lane Multi Pass experiences and arrival windows in advance from one park
      • Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios have a “2 Tier” system. When you select your 3 Lighting Lane experiences at these parks, you will be able to select 1 from Tier A and 2 from Tier B. If you would like to select all 3 from Tier B you can do that as well.
      • Even if you have a Park Hopper ticket, you will only be able to make advanced reservations at one park. Once you enter the park and redeem a reservation, you may make a reservation at any of the four theme parks.
    • If you select a Lightning Lane Single Pass, you can choose an arrival window in advance
  • Follow all prompts to complete your purchase and receive a confirmation
  • From the confirmation screen, you can tap “Plan Another Day” to purchase another pass—or tap “View My Day” for details about your Lightning Lane selections

How to Book Lightning Lane Multi Pass Reservations in the Park

Once you’re in the park, you are able to make additional Lightning Lane Multi Pass reservations through the My Disney Experience app once you redeem a reservation.

If you have a Park Hopper ticket, you will be able to make reservations at any of the four theme parks.

To reserve another LL by following these instructions:

  • Open up your My Disney Experience app.
  • On the homepage you will see the “My Plans” section. Click “My Day” (righthand side of screen)
  • Navigate to the “Tip Board” (left tab on screen)
  • You’ll see a list of attractions. Click the “LL” to book the next available return time.
  • Confirm your party
  • Book!

What is Lightning Lane Premier Pass?

Lightning Lane Premier Pass debuted as a new option for all guests and follows the same booking dates as the above. Premier Pass allows guests to ride each attraction with a Lightning Lane one time throughout their day at a selected park. Guests do not need to reserve a return time.

When purchasing, guests will select the date and park they would like to visit. Premier Pass can only be used at that park on the selected day. At this time you are not able to utilize Premier Pass when park hopping.

How Much is Lightning Lane Premier Pass?

Like Multi and Single Passes, Lightning Lane Premier Pass pricing varies based on the date and the park selected. At this time passes are priced between $149 and $449 per guest.
