Tips for planning a visit to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

1. Plan to Visit in Off-Season

Visiting during a time with lower crowd levels means that you can more easily navigate the lands. If possible, try to visit during off-peak times like late January, early February, or September. Crowds are lighter and lines are shorter, giving you more time to explore.

2. Stay at a Universal Resort

When you’re planning where to stay during your visit, consider staying at a Universal Resort Hotel so that you can take advantage of Early Park Admission. As a Universal Resort Hotel guest you’ll be able to enter one park (based on a calendar) an hour earlier than the official park opening time. During this hour you’ll be able to experience select attractions including the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

If it’s in your budget, consider staying at a Universal Signature Resort Hotel. Signature Resort guests receive complimentary Unlimited Universal Express Pass which allows you to cut down your wait times at participating attractions, and you can ride the attractions using your Express Pass as many times as you’d like. Express Pass can be purchased along with your ticket but it can get expensive. If you’re planning on staying at a Universal Resort Hotel, it’s usually less expensive to upgrade your Resort stay rather than purchase Express Pass a la carte.

PRO TIP: Not planning on staying at Universal? You can still take advantage of Early Park Admission when you purchase a multi-day ticket through a Travel Advisor.

3. Purchase a Park-to-Park Ticket

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter currently spans two parks, Universal Studios Florida and Universal’s Islands of Adventure, and soon will add a third location when Universal Epic Universe opens in 2025.

Diagon Alley (Universal Studios Florida) transports you to the hidden magical shopping district of London, complete with must-visit attractions like Escape from Gringotts.

Hogsmeade (Islands of Adventure) offers the charm of a snowy wizarding village and the towering sight of Hogwarts Castle. Attractions include Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey.

Ministry of Magic (Epic Universe) invites you to explore 1920s Paris and then be transported to the 1990s British Ministry, complete with the Battle of the Ministry attraction and Le Cirque Arcanus show.

Learn more about what you can find in each park in our free Guide to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

In order to ride one of the attractions, Hogwarts Express, you’ll need to have a Park-to-Park ticket because the attraction also serves as transportation between Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade. This is a must-do attraction, so we highly recommend getting at least a 2-Day Park-to-Park ticket to make the most of your experience.

4. Purchase an Interactive Wand

“The wand picks the wizard” and now you have your chance to get your own at Ollivanders Wand Shop. Opt for an interactive wand which allows you to cast spells at various locations throughout both Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade. Each wand comes with a map showing spell locations. Visit the locations, which are marked with medallions on the ground, and follow the instructions to cast a spell.

In addition to the marked locations, keep an eye out for a few secret spell spots that aren’t on the map. They add an extra element of surprise to your visit.

PRO TIP: When you go on rides, you’ll need to get a locker to place your belongings in, including your wand. Lockers are located outside of attraction entrances and small lockers are available at no cost. The small locker will fit fanny packs and small bags, so be sure to leave your backpacks at home.

5. Plan to Eat During Off-Peak Times

A trip to the Wizarding World isn’t complete without indulging in the magical cuisine and there are some must try’s that even muggles will enjoy. There are no table service (sit down) restaurants in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter but several quick service, snack, and bar locations, such as Hogshead Pub, The Three Broomsticks, and The Leaky Cauldron. The latter two are popular spots for lunch and dinner and can get long lines during peak meal times. To cut down on your wait time, plan to eat lunch between 11 AM – 12PM or 2 PM – 4 PM and dinner after 7 PM.

If you’re craving a Butterbeer (there are lots of different types to try – cold, frozen, and even hot certain times of years) while you’re in Hogsmeade, don’t just get in the first line you see. There are two stands that sell Butterbeer by the two entrances to the land. If one line looks long, head around the corner and check the other line. Lots of times one line builds up because people don’t realize there are two spots to grab this sweet drink!

5. Utilize Techniques to Cut Down on Attraction Waits

Arguably, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has some of the best attractions in Universal. From riding on a broom through Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, to narrowly escaping Gringotts in Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, you’ll have your far share of thrills during your day. These attractions, as well as Flight of the Hippogriff, offer an Express Lane for guests who have Express Pass. Express Pass is great to have to cut down on attraction wait times, but if you don’t have it, don’t worry! Head over to these attractions early in the morning or late in the evening to have the shortest wait times.

The most popular attraction in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter right now is Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure. In this high-speed rollercoaster, you’ll board a magical motorbike and ride through the Forbidden Forest. Hagrid’s does not currently offer an Express Lane and wait times an be 90+ minutes throughout the day.

PRO TIP: Utilize Early Park Admission to experience Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure. Early Park Admission is available to Universal Resort guests and guest who purchase a multi-day ticket through a Travel Advisor.
