Embarkation and debarkation days set the tone for your Disney Cruise vacation and understanding how they work can make a huge difference in how smooth and stress-free your experience feels. While these days involve logistics and timelines, Disney Cruise Line is known for being incredibly organized. With just a bit of preparation, both days can be simple, efficient, and even enjoyable. Whether this is your first Disney Cruise or you’re a seasoned sailor, here’s everything you need to know to feel confident heading on and off the ship.
Embarkation Day: Starting Your Cruise
Embarkation day, or when you board the ship, is when the magic begins. It’s an exciting day but can also be the most stressful part of the trips if you aren’t prepared.

Before You Leave Home
Once online check-in opens (typically midnight 30 days before sailing, and earlier for Castaway Club members), you’ll want to complete it as soon as possible. During online check-in, you’ll upload travel documents, select your Port Arrival Time, choose a boarding group, and add a credit card for onboard charges.
Choosing an earlier Port Arrival Time can often result in an earlier boarding group, which gives you more time to enjoy the ship on the first day.
It’s also important to pack a carry-on bag. Checked luggage is delivered to your stateroom later in the afternoon, so anything you may need before then should stay with you. This includes travel documents, medications, sunscreen, swimsuits, phone chargers, and a change of clothes for kids.
Be sure not to bring any prohibited items with you, both in your checked bags or carry-on bags. Weapons, illegal drugs, and other items that could interfere with the safe operation of the ship or the safe and secure environment of our guests and crew are prohibited. The following are examples of items that guests are not allowed to bring onboard.
- Firearms & Ammunition,
- Sharp objects (knives & scissors)
- Illegal Drugs & Substanes
- CBD Oil/ CBD products
- Items that generate heat
- Electrical Extension Cord
- Perishable food & meat products
Arriving at the Cruise Terminal
Disney asks guests to arrive within their assigned Port Arrival Time to help keep the process efficient. Upon arrival, you’ll hand off your checked luggage to porters (we recommend bringing a couple dollar bills to tip your porter), pass through security screening, and complete final check-in inside the terminal. Your check-in process will include presenting your IDs and Port Arrival documents (the QR code that you receive once online check in is complete). At this time you can also link your DisneyBand to your account if you’d like to use it throughout your cruise.

Once checked in, you’ll wait for your boarding group to be called.
Boarding the Ship
When your boarding group is called, you’ll scan your QR code or DisneyBand once more and then officially step onboard! Disney makes it extra special by announcing your family name and there are often Disney characters in the grand hall to welcome you. Staterooms are usually ready between 1:30 and 2:00 PM, but the rest of the ship opens much earlier.
Once onboard, you can:
- Enjoy lunch at the buffet or one of the main dining rooms (one will be open onboard for a table service dining experience)
- Explore the ship while it’s still relatively quiet
- Visit the pool deck (swimsuits in your carry-on help here)
- Take advantage of kids’ club open house times
- Dining Requests: If you have any requests that were not confirmed prior to boarding for your dining, Disney Cruise Line will have a space dedicated to dining requests where you can speak to the dining team. This also is where you can go to see about availability for Palo and or Remy/Enchante during your sailing.
Taking time to explore on embarkation day helps you feel oriented and relaxed for the rest of the cruise.
Staterooms & Luggage
Staterooms generally open to guests between 1:30 PM and 2:00 PM. Once staterooms open, you will find an envelope above your room number next to your door. Inside the envelope are your keycards that can be used to access your stateroom, for disembarking the ship at ports, and for onboard charging. Each guest will have their own keycard including children. If you brought a DisneyBand and linked it to your account when checking in at the terminal, you can also use your DisneyBand for all of these things as well.
If you are sailing on the Disney Dream, Fantasy, Wish, Treasure, or Destiny, you will be required to place a card into slot next to the door inside of your room to activate the power. We recommend bringing a card that you won’t be using throughout the sailing to leave in the slot so you don’t forget your card in the room.
Checked luggage will be delivered outside of your door. Luggage is typically delivered by 4:30 PM but can take longer depending on when guests check in.
Muster Drill
Prior to the ship leaving port, all guests are required to take part in a mandatory Muster Drill. You will hear an announcement made over the intercom to report to your Muster Station. The station is noted by a letter on your keycard and in your Disney Navigator App. You will see signs helping you locate your Muster Station and once there will check in with a crew member. You will watch a safety instruction and then be dismissed once all staterooms have been accounted for.

Sail Away Party
Once the Muster Drill is completed, the sail away party begins on the pool deck. Disney characters and crew members lead a celebration to kick off the cruise as the ship sails away from the port. You’ll also hear the beloved Disney Cruise Line horn.
Debarkation Day: Heading Home
Debarkation day may be the end of your cruise, but Disney keeps it well-organized to make the transition as smooth as possible.
The Night Before Disembarkation
On the final evening, you’ll receive detailed debarkation instructions in your stateroom. Guests typically choose between Assisted Debarkation or Express Walk-Off.
With Assisted Debarkation, you will receive luggage tags in your stateroom with a Disney character on them. Fill out the tags and place them onto each piece of luggage you would like Disney to handle taking off of the ship for you. You’ll place your tagged luggage outside your stateroom the night before (normally by 10 PM) and retrieve it in the terminal after leaving the ship. This option works well for most guests. Be sure to keep any items you’ll need with you in a bag that you will carry off yourself.
Express Walk-Off allows you to carry all of your luggage off the ship yourself and disembark earlier. This is a good option for guests with early flights or those who prefer a quicker exit.
The Morning of Debarkation
Breakfast will available in the main dining room that you ate in the evening before. Be sure to check the Disney Navigator App for your breakfast seating time.
A smaller offering will also be available in the buffet dining room starting at 6:30 AM. This is a great option for guests taking advantage of Express Walk-Off, as this normally begins at 7:30 AM once the ship has been cleared by Customs Officials.
Guests who are taking advantage of Assisted Debarkation will wait for the character noted on their luggage tags provided by Disney to be called. Once called they can disembark and collect their luggage in the terminal. This process typically begins around 8 AM.
Once guests enter the terminal, the customs and immigration process is usually quick, especially at U.S. ports where facial recognition or passport checks are commonly used. Be sure to be aware of the different lines that are available if you are sailing with any guests that are utilizing an ID other than a passport.
Guests using Disney-provided ground transportation are guided step-by-step by Cast Members, making the process especially easy.
