Tips for Traveling Through Orlando International Airport

Orlando International Airport (MCO) is one of the busiest airports in the United States, welcoming millions of visitors each year heading to Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, Florida’s beaches, and sailing on cruises. While it’s a beautiful airport with plenty of amenities, it can also feel overwhelming, especially during peak travel seasons. Whether you’re flying in or out, these tips will help make your journey through MCO smoother and less stressful.

Tips for Traveling through Orlando International Airport

Arrive Early

Security lines at MCO can get very long, especially during school breaks, summer, and the holiday season. To avoid stress, plan to arrive:

  • 2–3 hours before domestic flights
  • 3–4 hours before international flights

Give yourself extra time if you’re checking bags, returning a rental car, or traveling with children. The airport is large, and walking between check-in counters, security, and gates can take longer than expected. If you’re traveling early in the morning or late at night, lines may be shorter, but it’s still better to play it safe.

KMV Tip: There are several lounges that can be accessed with a Priority Pass – check to see if you get access through your credit card or consider a day pass.

Know Your Terminal

Orlando International Airport has three terminals:

  • Terminal A & B: These are connected in one main building. After security, you’ll take a tram (called an “Airside”) to your gate area. Airlines here include Delta, Southwest, United, American, Spirit, Frontier, and many more.
  • Terminal C: The newest terminal, opened in 2022, is sleek, modern, and connected to the Brightline high-speed train. Airlines here include JetBlue, Aer Lingus, British Airways, and Lufthansa.

Because the terminals are spread out, it’s important to know exactly which one your airline operates from before you arrive. Parking, drop-off, and check-in areas are different for each, and switching between them can take time.

KMV Tip: Don’t panic if you end up in the wrong terminal – C is only about a 15 minute ride from A and B on the APM.

Navigating Security

While MCO is notorious for long security lines, there are a few ways to avoid the waits and the stress that so often comes with them.

  • TSA PreCheck & CLEAR: If you have them, use them! These memberships can save you a lot of time and get you through security with less upheaval.
  • MCO Reserve: If you don’t have TSA Precheck or CLEAR, utilize MCO Reserve to book a time to go through security. This free offering can be booked up to 7 days in advance of your flight. Reserve your time at: www.flymco.com/mcoreserve
  • Family Lanes: If you’re traveling with strollers, car seats, or small children, look for family lanes. They move a little slower but are more accommodating for parents juggling gear.
  • Security Wait Times: Check the MCO app before you arrive to see real-time updates. This can help you choose the best checkpoint.

Remember, after security in Terminals A & B, you’ll need to take the tram to reach your gate, so allow a few extra minutes for this transfer.

Getting Around the Airport

Before your visit to Orlando International Airport, be sure to download the MCO App. You’ll be able to easily find locations, navigate the airport, and track your flight.

In Terminals A and B, you will be required to board an Airside Tram after going through security to get to your gate. Airside Trams run continuously but can get busy at peak times, so it’s always good to build in some extra time to get to your gate.

For travelers with mobility issues, courtesy carts are sometimes available in the gate areas. You can speak with an Orlando Airport representative or flag one down if you see one passing.

If you have little ones, we recommend bringing a stroller with you to cut down on amount the have to walk.

Food & Shopping

Orlando International Airport has a variety of dining and shopping options including:

  • Before Security: Good for quick coffee or snacks if you’re waiting to check in.
  • After Security: Each Airside has its own mix of restaurants. You’ll find familiar names like Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, Chipotle, and Panda Express, as well as sit-down restaurants if you want a full meal.
  • Terminal C: Offers some of the best and newest dining options, with local flavors like Wine Bar George (from Disney Springs) and Sunshine Diner.

Shopping includes last-minute travel essentials and plenty of Orlando-themed stores. If you forgot a Disney souvenir, want a Harry Potter wand from Universal, or need SeaWorld gear, you’ll find it here!

Transportation & Arrivals

Once you land, you’ll need to plan your ground transportation:

  • Rental Cars: Rental agencies are located inside Terminals A & B, making it convenient, but lines can be long on weekends.
  • Rideshare (Uber/Lyft): Pickups happen in designated areas on the arrivals level. Be sure to follow the signs or your driver’s instructions in the app.
  • Hotel & Theme Park Shuttles: Many area hotels and resorts provide shuttle buses, and Universal Orlando offers direct transfers for guests staying on property. Disney’s old Magical Express is no longer offered, but third-party companies like Mears Connect serve Disney resort guests.
  • Brightline Train: Located in Terminal C, this high-speed train connects Orlando to Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach. It’s a convenient option if your vacation takes you beyond Orlando.

KMV Tip: Reserve your transportation in advance to avoid surcharges you may face when booking a rideshare at the airport.
