Savi’s Workshop Review: Building a Lightsaber in Disney

Lightsaber building Disney Parks

If you’re a Star Wars fan, you’ve most likely thought to yourself “it would be awesome to have a lightsaber.” I know I definitely have, so when I saw that I could make my own lightsaber in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, I had to do it! Savi’s Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers is located in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and allows you to build a lightsaber of your choosing. Below is a full guide to lightsaber building at Walt Disney World and Disneyland.

How to Build a Lightsaber at Disney

If you’d like to make your own lightsaber, you’ll need to get a reservation at Savi’s Workshop, which is located in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge (Black Spire Outpost) in both Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World and Disneyland Park. The experience is popular amongst guests and reservations are highly recommended. Reservations are available up to 60 days in advance and can be made through the My Disney Experience app for Walt Disney World and the Disneyland app for Disneyland Park.

Each lightsaber builder may bring along a guest who will not take part in the building process. Guests must be at least 5 years old in order to participate and guests under 7 years old must be accompanied by someone over the age of 14.

The current cost to build your own lightsaber is $249.99 per lightsaber, plus tax. No discounts are available and payment is required at time of booking for Walt Disney World. At Disneyland, you will provide a credit card at time of booking and will be charged once you check in for the experience.

Savi’s Workshop: The Experience

When you reserve your time slot, you will be asked to arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled reservation to check in. You’ll notice as you walk up to Savi’s Workshop that there is no clear signage notating what the location is. This is so the First Order is not able to identify the location.

Once you arrive, you will check in with a Cast Member and they will ask you to scan a QR code that brings you to a diagram of the available lightsaber options. Each builder will have the opportunity to construct their own custom lightsaber using the pieces provided. Prior to entering the workshop, builders will select the theme (type of lightsaber) they would like to build. Available lightsaber themes include:

  • Peace and Justice: Salvaged scraps from fallen Jedi temples and crashed starships in these Republic-era designs honor the galaxy’s former guardians.
  • Power and Control: Originally forged by dark side warriors, this style features rumored remnants from the Sith homeworld and abandoned temples.
  • Elemental Nature: This theme embodies the Force—an energy created by all living things, like Brylark trees, Cartusion whale bones and Rancor teeth.
  • Protection and Defense: Hilt materials bear mysterious motifs and inscriptions that reconnect users with the ancient wellspring of the Force.

I picked Peace and Justice when I built my lightsaber and was provided a pin to wear that notated my selection. Along with the pin, you are also given a card that identifies your build group. Once you have both of these items, you will be brought into a sectioned off area that is right outside of the entrance of the workshop. You will be held here until it is time for your build. We were brought in about 15 minutes after our reservation time.

Inside, you will be asked to stand at a spot around a circular table while Gatherers (the Cast Members who will assist you throughout the build process) prepare the materials. This is when the experience really begins, as a Gatherer will lead you through the process of building a lightsaber and explain the importance of each of the pieces you select and assemble.

First, you will be asked to select one of four kyber crystal colors – blue, red, purple or green. The Gatherer shares information about each, highlighting some of the most famous Star Wars characters who have wielded lightsabers with each kyber crystal.

I selected blue and was instructed to place it in front of me. After, you will be provided the hilt and a tray of parts to assemble your lightsaber. For each part, you will be able to select one of two options that are available in the tray. You can mix and match as much as you’d like.

Gatherers will assist you in assembling your lightsaber if needed. After you have completed the assembly, Gatherers will place your lightsaber in a special slot to the right of your building station.

The final ceremony is the highlight of the experience, as you get to see everyone’s lightsabers lit up in the darkened room. Upon exiting the workshop, you will be provided a carrying bag.

The experience from start to finish is about 30 minutes in length.

Is Savi’s Workshop Worth It?

With a hefty price tag (at $249.99 plus tax), it’s typical to question if Savi’s Workshop is worth it. If you’re a Star Wars fan or just love an immersive experience, the answer is a resounding yes! The entire experience puts you into your own Star Wars story, allowing you to create your own lightsaber and join the Jedi in their fight for good. I’ve taken part in lots of experiences at Disney and I can say this is one of the best I have ever had at a Disney Park. The lightsaber itself is high quality and the overall “show” of the experience is exceptional.

Tips for Building Your Lightsaber

  • Build your lightsaber in the evening – While Galaxy’s Edge is incredible any time of the day, being able to see your lightsaber lit up in the evening can’t be beat! Be sure to stop by the PhotoPass photographers who are set up around Galaxy’s Edge for some awesome photos.
  • If you’re flying home, ship home your lightsaber – You can ship your lightsaber home for an additional cost (about $15-$20) by going to the Droid Depot or Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities.
  • Grab a reservation in Oga’s Cantina after – I have to give my husband credit for this one. When I told him I was going to build a lightsaber, he said we had to get a reservation at Oga’s to complete the experience! He was right – bringing your lightsaber into Oga’s Cantina made it even more exciting!
